UCM launches uniformed protective services course for would-be emergency workers

The two-year BTEC replaces the college's Psychology course and can be combined with Level 3 Forensics for the equivalent of three A-Levels.

Students hoping to join the police, the fire service or the armed forces have a new option at University College Isle of Man (UCM), which has launched a qualification in Uniformed Protective Services, Energy FM reported.

The course is a BTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate and takes the place of UCM’s Psychology course. It will be taught alongside the college’s existing Level 3 Forensics programme. According to Energy FM, students who take both can gain qualifications equivalent to three A-Levels.

The programme runs over two years. Its topics include:

  • behaviour and discipline
  • expedition skills
  • leadership
  • teamwork and communication

Energy FM said the qualification is aimed at people heading for uniformed public service. It named policing, firefighting, the military, prison work and border force as examples. The course can also lead on to higher study, with policing, criminology and law among the subjects mentioned.

Prospective students can find out more from UCM directly or at the college’s open evening on 19 November.
