What to know

Before you drive

The Mountain Road curving across open moorland under a footbridge built for the TT, beneath a grey sky.
Photo: Stephen Darlington, CC BY-SA 2.0

Driving on the island

  • Drive on the left. Limits are in miles per hour, as in the UK.
  • Some roads outside towns have no speed limit at all. The round white sign with a black diagonal stripe means no set limit there, not 70mph. You must still drive at a safe speed, and police can still charge careless or dangerous driving. Towns and villages have speed limits, so watch for the signs.
  • The Mountain Road (A18) between Ramsey and Douglas crosses open moorland and can close in high winds or for events. Check road closures.
  • During TT fortnight the Mountain Road is one-way, in the direction of the races, from Ramsey Hairpin to Creg-ny-Baa. Parts of the course close for practice and racing: if you are staying inside the course, park outside it before the roads close, or you will not be able to drive in or out.

Book early for TT and the Classic TT

  • TT 2027 is planned with qualifying from 31 May and races from 5 to 12 June. The Classic TT and Manx Grand Prix are in late August.
  • Firms charge more and take money up front for these weeks: ASP’s TT rates are higher and TT bookings are non-refundable; Hertz Isle of Man takes a £100 non-refundable deposit; Let’s Hire’s booking fee rises to £100; Athol may charge a 7-day minimum; 4Hire says its prices may vary at premium times.
  • Athol says its automatics and estates are limited in number, so book those early at any time of year.

Sources: Isle of Man TT: provisional 2027 schedule ↗ and each firm’s terms above.

Fuel and charging

  • Fuel rules differ: Athol gives cars a quarter of a tank (vans come full), ASP half and Hertz Isle of Man a full tank, while 4Hire and Let’s Hire ask for the level you collected it at. Return the same, or pay a refuelling charge.
  • Fuel prices vary by brand and place. Public chargers use the Evolt or Pod Point apps: set them up before you arrive.

Find an EV charger →

Parking

  • Much of the island uses disc parking: set your arrival time on a parking disc and leave it on the dashboard, and stay no longer than the signs allow. The TT’s visitor guide says a disc comes with a hire car.
  • Check where you can park overnight where you are staying.

Source: Isle of Man TT: car and bike hire ↗

Car parks and charges →

What to bring

  • Your full driving licence, and a credit or debit card: most firms hold a deposit on one.
  • UK drivers: ASP asks for a DVLA check code, and Let’s Hire asks for proof of address and your National Insurance number. A licence not in English needs an International Driving Permit at Hertz Isle of Man.
  • Book child seats with the car. Athol includes the first one; ASP charges £5.50 a day.

Booking through a travel site?

  • Booking sites sell hire on the island too, usually with a car from one of the firms above. Check which firm supplies it, where you collect it and whose excess applies.
  • Cover bought from a booking site is separate: the hire firm may still hold a deposit on your card for the full excess. Athol’s insurance page says so.
How we check these details

Everything here comes from each firm’s own website, plus its Visit Isle of Man listing where the website leaves something out, and each firm lists its sources with the date they were checked. We show only prices a firm publishes, labelled as “from” prices, and say whether the firm states that they include VAT. We do not use booking systems or quote forms, and we never estimate a price a firm does not publish. Limited-period offers are shown only in the firm’s own entry, with their terms. ASP Car Hire’s published rates are checked daily. Other firms’ details are checked by hand.

The dates helper counts hire days in 24-hour periods from your pick-up time, as most firms do, and multiplies the published daily rate by them. It adds only published daily charges for lower-excess cover or a second driver. Fuel, child seats, out-of-hours fees, deposits and discounts for longer hires are not included. The lowest guide it names counts only firms that can, or might, meet you at your pick-up place, and puts prices that include VAT first.

Some booking sites list other names at Ronaldsway that we could not confirm on the island; they are not listed until confirmed. Firms are listed alphabetically and no firm pays to appear. If something here is wrong or out of date, tell us.
