Atherton and Cain win senior races at cross-country league opener

Paul Atherton took his first Isle of Man Cross-Country League win at Port-e-Chee, while Christa Cain won on her league debut after a 35km morning run.

Paul Atherton and Christa Cain won the senior races as the Isle of Man Cross-Country League opened its season in sunshine at Port-e-Chee on 11 October.

It was Atherton’s first victory in the league after many years of cross-country running and a string of high finishes, Energy FM reported. Alex Bell was second and John Halligan third.

Cain, the Commonwealth Games athlete, won at her first attempt in the league. According to Energy FM, she had run 35km on the road that morning. Under-18 runner Max Hammal paced her throughout. Kirsty Barber finished second in the women’s race and Sammy Bowden third.

The short course race, which included the under-14 events, was led for a long spell by 400m specialist Ben Sinclair, who Energy FM said was using it to build endurance at the start of his winter training. Leighton Curphey closed him down strongly towards the end on his way to winning the U14 boys race.

Catherine Perry won the women’s short course race on her return to local competition after finishing university in Leeds.

In the junior races:

  • U14 boys: Leighton Curphey, ahead of Jack Davies, who edged Henry Quaye in a sprint for second
  • U14 girls: Maisy-Jo Faragher, ahead of Emira Bowden and Matilda Woakes
  • U12 boys: Jack Davison, from George Looney and Oliver Halligan
  • U12 girls: Millie Moody, from Lorelei Wilson and Harper Quayle
