Six Isle of Man hockey squads played first-round matches in this season’s England Hockey Championships in north-west England at the weekend, according to Isle of Man Today.
The island’s five junior teams met sides from Chester, Kirkby Stephen, Preston and Timperley. The under-14 boys beat Preston 5-1, and the under-16 girls won 6-0 against Chester.
The under-18 girls drew 3-3 with Kirkby Stephen before winning the shuffles. The under-16 boys and under-18 boys both lost by a single goal, 5-4 to Timperley and 6-5 to Preston respectively. Reports on the junior matches are due in this week’s Manx Independent, Isle of Man Today said.
The women’s over-45s were beaten 2-1 by Aire Valley. Aire Valley scored twice early on before Ros Lynch converted a short corner to halve the deficit by half-time, Isle of Man Today reported.
The second half was open, with chances at both ends. Agile goalkeeping from Debbie Shimmin kept the score unchanged, but Aire Valley’s defence resisted repeated Manx attacks to hold on to their lead.
The squad thanked Niamh Goddard for her administrative support, and Ciaran Gell and Paul Hunter for travelling to umpire.
