Manxman due back in dry dock as repaired propeller shafts return from Denmark

The Steam Packet hopes to have its flagship sailing again from late November, and puts the repair bill at about £5 million.

The Steam Packet’s flagship, Manxman, was due to go back into dry dock at Birkenhead on 14 October now that its propeller shafts have come back from repair in Denmark, Manx Radio reported.

The ship has been at the Merseyside yard since July. Routine maintenance there uncovered damage to its propulsion shafts, along with the liners and bearings.

According to Manx Radio, the Steam Packet Company confirmed that the repaired shafts had been delivered to the Birkenhead shipyard. With no shafts currently fitted, Manxman was to be moved into the dock with the help of three tugs.

In dry dock, workers will refit the shafts and bearings and carry out other external work. Inspections and sea trials are scheduled to follow.

The company is working towards a return to service from the end of November. It estimates that the repairs will cost about £5 million in total.
