The Isle of Man Natural History and Antiquarian Society will open its 2026–27 winter programme at the Manx Museum in Douglas on Saturday 17 October, with a lecture on the churches of Lonan.

Author and society member Derek Winterbottom will present St Adamnan’s Church and Lonan Parish in the museum’s lecture theatre from 14:30, according to Isle of Man Today. The talk will trace the story of the parish’s four churches across their whole history, up to the present day.

It will also look at Canon John Quine, a former headmaster of Douglas Grammar School who was Vicar of All Saints, Lonan, from 1895 to 1940. During that time he restored St Adamnan’s, also known as Lonan Old Church, near Baldrine, which had fallen into neglect. He was president of the society from 1916 to 1917.

The lecture will also cover the work of Manx-born designer Archibald Knox, known for his links with the Arts and Crafts, Art Nouveau and Celtic Revival movements and with Liberty & Co.

Tea or coffee and biscuits will be served afterwards. The society advises arriving early to get a seat. Non-members can make a voluntary contribution.

The next lecture, on Saturday 14 November, will see Laura McCoy discuss developments in the Manx Museum’s natural history collection. More details are available at manxantiquarians.com.
