Yellow warning issued for coastal overtopping on Tuesday's high tides

Minor overtopping is possible on promenades in Douglas, Laxey, Castletown and Ramsey and on Shore Road in Rushen as strong southerly winds coincide with high tides.

Ronaldsway Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for coastal overtopping, with strong winds and high tides expected to combine overnight and into Tuesday 13 October.

According to Isle of Man Today, the warning is split into two windows: 23:45 on Monday to 03:00 on Tuesday, then 12:15 to 15:15 on Tuesday. Manx Radio reported it as a single period running from 23:45 until 15:15. Forecasters say the risk peaks around the high tides, due at roughly 01:15 and 13:45.

Isle of Man Today reported that southerly winds, turning south-westerly later, are likely to cause minor overtopping. It said exposed coasts and promenades could be left with a small amount of debris.

The outlet listed these areas as most at risk around the overnight high tide:

  • central and northern stretches of Douglas promenade
  • Laxey promenade
  • Castletown promenade
  • Shore Road in Rushen
  • Ramsey promenade, though the risk there is lower

For the afternoon high tide, it named the northern end of Douglas promenade, Castletown promenade and Shore Road as at risk, with a smaller chance of water reaching the promenades at Ramsey and Laxey.
